What does sexism look like?

If you’re a woman or girl in the world today, chances are you’ve seen or experienced sexual discrimination. While not everyone has faced being denied a job, not let in somewhere, or bullied because of their sex/gender, there are plenty of examples in day-to-day life that you may not have even realized. In fact, the biggest problem with sexism today is that we, as a society, have become so used to these inequalities that we don’t even think twice about the problems with them. If you are a teenage girl like I am, now is the time that many of these double standards are hitting us in the face. It is our job now to call attention where it is needed and make sure we do not live in a world in which this injustice is accepted and normalized.

Here are some examples of sexism you have probably encountered that you may not have thought twice about:

  • The difference between girl scouts and boy scouts
  • Girl dress codes vs. boy dress codes
  • Slut shaming
  • The expectations of female Halloween costumes vs. male
  • Sexualizing of women (and young girls) in magazines and the media
  • The assumption that all girls wear makeup or dress up to impress men
  • The saying “boys will be boys”

Now, you may have already thought about all of these (which is great!), or you may have questions. I would love to get into the specifics of each of these examples, and more! That’s why I’ve created this website; I want to bring into the light all the nitty-gritty definitions of sexism in the world today– and then call them each out on their BS. Because while they might seem small and insignificant individually, they have collectively been enough to fool women into thinking they are worth less than men are, for nearly all of human existence.
