“Intersectional feminism” is probably a term you’ve heard before, but what does it mean? Well, it’s the opposite of “white feminism.” Intersectional feminism means taking into consideration that women with intersectional identities (being a part of multiple marginalized groups) face oppression in different ways than white women. It also means that, in order to have a true understanding of feminism, one must seek out information from diverse sources. To be a true supporter of women, one must lift up diverse voices.
In our world today, far too many white women call themselves feminists, and then do not show any concern for the oppression faced by our brothers and sisters of color, or with disabilities, or of different religions. Picking and choosing which women you support, as a “feminist,” does not cut it. It gives a bad name to the movement that exists in order to serve all women. I (and many others) personally believe that being a real feminist must include intersectional consideration.
Of course, labelling yourself as something is not the same as taking action to prove your support. If you, like me, like to support activists on social media, make sure you are not only exposing yourself to creators with your same perspective. Some inspiring women creators of color I follow on Tiktok are @tblizzy, @jordxn.simone, @herspective, and @kimberleejoi. I have found it very worthwhile to listen to differing perspectives than mine on issues I care about. I think that that is essential to learning.
